And The Oscar Goes To...

The 92^nd Oscar Awards are all poised to razzle-dazzle with big guns of film fraternity stepping on red carpet and setting it ablaze with haute couture and love-struck eye-candy on their arms. As anticipation builds and the entire film fraternity holds its breath, expectant winners will soon start searching their coat pockets for that much-awaited speech to deliver. Agree or not, this is one occasion that makes actors, actresses, and directors’ sweat profusely and others’ heart beat faster, while pulling the rug under some. But, on the whole, turning everyone misty-eyed as Oscar Awards are announced. Come 9^th February 2020, Oscar Awards will telecast to global crowds, pegging it as the most-watched showbiz event in the world.

The 92^nd Oscar Awards is sure to throw surprises in many ways.  With a great deal of riveting movies lined-up for a spread of awards across different categories, this year’s entries are all top-notch that deserve a watch. Nonetheless, there are apprehensions that some directors are overlooked and few are conveniently ignored for ‘POC’ factor coming into play. So much so that this year’s Oscar Nominations are shrouded in controversies. Commenting on Nominations, one reputed international newspaper puts it as “Very male, very white”.

If we look beyond these happenings, we can marvel at the diversity of movies that took centre-stage. The Best Picture award alone has seen varying movies eyeing for the top slot. ‘Joker’, ‘Ford v Ferrari’, ‘The Irishman’, ‘1917’, ‘Little Women’, ‘Jojo Rabbit’ ‘Marriage Story’, ‘Once upon a time in Hollywood’ are movies that vouch for riveting screenplays and gripping storylines. Each excels in its own sphere of work; as a result, putting a finger on the winner proves to be a lot dicier. The Irishman story zigzags across time spaces, while Ford V Ferrari is so sublimely shot that one feels transported to the 1960s;  topping as the icing is  the pulsating grand finale at ‘Le Mans’, which is surely enough to kick up the adrenaline high. ‘Once upon a time...in Hollywood’ takes you back to hippy era – long hair, floral shirts, bell-bottoms and the likes, all these, with the added quintessential Quentin Tarantino’s directional touch.  What comes as a curve ball in this category is the surprise entry ‘Parasite’.  Directed by Bong Joon Ho, this is the first South Korean film to be nominated for Oscars. Although no actors were picked for Oscars, the movie does script a first in the categories of ‘Best Picture’, ‘Screenplay’, ‘Editing and Production Design’. It created ripples with its Oscar history! Bollywood has been trying to win a slot here, but unfortunately couldn’t make much headway.

Best Actor category

The category has witnessed few Hollywood’s bigwigs clashing, Joaquin Phoenix for ‘Joker’, Leonardo DiCaprio for ‘Once upon a time...in Hollywood’, and Antonio Banderas for ‘Pain and Glory’, while Adam Driver for ‘Marriage Story’ and  Jonathan Pryce  for ‘The Two Popes’ are not stepping down either from putting up a fight. And if anything, to deduce from the number of Oscar nominations received and netizens crying praise for best performances, Joaquin Phoenix will have the last laugh. Hang on! There’s also talk that Leonardo DiCaprio and Antonio Banderas are in that who-will-win-the-Oscar race.  But gloomy clouds loom large over them!

Best Actress category

Its clear five actresses have their eye on the Oscars’ Best Actress Award this year. Cynthia Erivo in ‘Harriet’, Scarlet Johansson in ‘Marriage Story’, Saoirse Ronan in ‘Little Women’, Charlize Theron in ‘Bombshell’, and Renee Zellweger in ‘Judy’, all have put their best foot forward and now have their fingers crossed. Each of these movies’ storyline is different, calling for actresses who would don the role with panache and overwhelm audiences. Based on their acting prowess alone, movie-lovers are craving in their hearts for Cynthia Erivo or Scarlet Johansson to grab the Best Actress award. While Cynthia’s movie ‘Harriet’ is a biopic that underscores the liberation of hundreds of slaves through the Underground Railroad, Scarlet Johansson’s ‘Marriage Story’ is all about traversing the difficult waters of bicoastal separation and imminent divorce. However, which actress will walk away with the Golden Man in her arms is a question that will probably ring in our heads for some time.  

Oscar Surprises!

 ‘Joker’ did spring a surprise! With it getting 11 nominations, the intensity of competition from this movie in different categories is appealing too. Todd Philips’ story of the clown prince of crime is garnering rave reviews. When premiering at Venice Film Festival, the movie received an eight-minute standing ovation and a Golden Lion award. On different plateau, though the craze for comic book films has been raging across the globe, Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t been able to win much appreciation in the form of Oscars. However, this time ‘Avengers Endgame’ got a nomination in the Best Visual Effects Category striking a bit of solace in the hearts of its makers. Scarlet Johansson bagged two nominations. Best Actress for ‘Marriage Story’ and Best Supporting Actress for ‘Jojo Rabbit’. She is the only 12^th Actor to receive two nominations.  

Oscar Snubs

Like 2015, that tipped the balance in favour of “White”, many journalists and artists opine that this time too there’s a noticeable tilt. #OscarSoWhite2020 is actually trending. Consequently, this year’s Oscar nominations are caught in disagreements as there were a few snubs that didn’t go well with movie-lovers. The Best Director category nominations featured only males, turning a blind eye on women directors who shot some very interesting movies. Greta Gerwig’s directional flick “Little Women” got the nomination for Best Picture, but was snubbed for the Best Director, while Celine Sciamma was ignored for her riveting direction of ‘Hustlers’.

Jennifer Lopez was snubbed for the Best Supporting Actresses Nomination even though she seemed a clear-front runner. Vulnerability fills the hearts of moviegoers as they assumed she might even win an Oscar for her terrific acting skills. She was earlier nominated for BAFTA, Golden Globe, Critic’s choice and many others, but unfortunately, for reasons best known to the Oscar jury, she was given a pass. A case of ‘POC’?! Talking of POC, Eddie Murphy’s triumphant return through comedic acting in the Netflix Biopic “Dolomite is my Name” didn’t win any nominations either.

Whatever the reason for fame or critique, all said and done, Oscar Awards is still as much a heart-throbbing event as it was many years ago. The event consistently rolling on is gathering more glitter. With global connectivity touching new levels, the reach of Oscar tentacles spreads further, it’s not a surprise that we are celebrating the 92^nd Oscar Awards - wonder how many still to go?! Anyways, no complaining!

Make Merry with Movies

This festive season is all about goodwill, compassion and cheer, which the western world, aptly captures in its rich radiance. Add to this, carols resonating in snowy streets; bearded -Santa ringing the bell by the corner, shops studded with green hollies, golden and silver bobs, and brightly lit Christmas trees. Wow, the works can put the spring in the walk. For those who still haven’t gotten into the Christmas spirit yet, no worries. There are countless movies streaming on Netflix and Amazon Prime that instantly catapult you into festive celebrations.

These flicks carry a glowing halo of compassion; love and sharing that elevate the very spirit of Christmas to greater heights. Some plots are so intense the viewer easily sheds a tear or two. Themes are typically romantic sorts, yet, there’s a spirit of kindness and love that pervades the screen and plays on the heart, communicating that little things done right during Christmas time can change the very course of their lives. 

 The flick “Christmas Inheritance” is one shining example of Christmas bliss. At first, you feel the whole story is thrown out of the window when actress Ellen Langford (Eliza Taylor) embarrasses her billionaire father with her inappropriate behaviour. Her father is livid with rage. To make up for him, she takes a tour to Snowfalls to deliver a letter to Uncle Zeke. The journey is a complete turnaround for her. The little place, where she seeks shelter, and Jake Collins (Jake Lacy), the Inn manager, teach her the deep significance of love and sharing during the Christmas. She relishes her stay, though it means working as a waitress. But, will the billionaire heiress agree to dance with the flow or give up the quest?! Snuggle up, get cuddly, and punch the remote button. Off you go to Snowfalls!

Talking of festive spirit, “A Christmas Prince” is a movie that sweeps you off your feet. The plot revolves around prince Richard of Aldovia, who is all but a prince. Prince Richard (Ben Lamb) actually shies away from accepting the royal crown and plans to abrogate. The tabloids run stories of his escapades with the ladies, though none of them are actually true. To uncover his secrets, a young reporter (Amber) stealthily sneaks into the palace as an imposter, but she is in for a total shock. It’s a story that will pull on the heart strings, and throw you around with unexpected twists. The story is intricately laced with charming misgivings, misunderstandings and mismanaging of things!  Cozy up with a mug of hot chocolate and ready up for a sentimental upswing. That’s not all; the movie has sequels that are as much delightful. A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding and A Christmas Prince: The Royal Baby. Since the first movie was a raging success, it gave way for two more, making it the Christmas trilogy.

 “A wish for Christmas” is another amusing pick. What starts off as a mere wish to be brave, puts Sara Thomas (Lacey Chabert) on an adventure run along with Peter Williams (Paul Greene), her boss! However, the Christmas wish of “bravery” stands true only for 48 hours. While the time ticks fast, she starts taking bold initiatives. But wait! Where’s the pulling of the heart factor?! Yes! You don’t get hit in the heart until the father and son relationship sneaks into purview. Both are swords drawn. No backing. Will they embrace the Christmas spirit and forgive each other? Will Sara Thomas play a role in one of them waving the white flag of truce?! Steady yourself. We aren’t telling a wee bit on how the movie swings. Grab your remote and head for the TV to discover on your own.

“The Knight Before Christmas”: It’s something like a takeoff on Kate & Leopold, but what makes this intriguing is the Christmas background it is set in. When the old Crone tells Knight of Norwich, Sir Cole (Josh Whitehouse): you shall see things undreamed of – flying steel dragons and horses, magic boxes that make merry, Sir Cole is perplexed. But when time-transported from the medieval age to present-day Ohio, he discovers that dragons are planes; the magic box is the TV. The funny part is when Brooke (Vanessa Hudgens) hits him with her car but she is the one who is struck by his medieval chivalry. Sir Cole too gets zapped at the amazing new-age gadgets. What spices up the movie is his peculiar old English juxtaposed with today’s English - queerly playing on one’s mind on language dialect quotient!

All these flicks have beautiful Christmas carols interspersed within them, putting us in the thick of Christmas revelry.  Songs such as “Deck the Halls with Boughs of Holly”  “Silent Night” “Joy to the World” “Feliz Navidad” “O Come All Ye Faithful” and others light up the Christmas mood straight away. The backgrounds decorated in snowy whites, crimson reds and bottle greens, these movies are where you can pick an idea or two on decorating home. Yeah! These movies could be really enriching.

Although Netflix has a hoard of Christmas-themed movies and series, Prime too has its own collection that takes you to the North on a Polar Express, where the kids would love to jump on it. Then, there’s “It’s a wonderful life” “The most wonderful time of the year” “Prancer” and a whole lot more! The list seems to be growing year on year. That’s because Christmas is all about spreading love, cheer and good will. Well, these movies sure carry the essence of these and light up the hearts with hope! It’s the season of giving. Nothing can warm the heart of a person, who gives lovingly and cheerfully to others! Three cheers to the spirit of Christmas!

The End of Saga

From the very first release of ‘First Blood’ to possibly the final one ‘Rambo:  Last Blood’, the series comes to a full-circle. Sylvester Stallone can only be admired for his gutsy spirit in delivering hit after hit throughout the ‘Rambo’ franchise. ‘Rambo: Last Blood’ is still a movie that could give best action heroes a run for their money.  The Rambo series has left a legacy of its own with its five audacious movies. First blood (1982), Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985), Rambo III (1988), Rambo (2008), Rambo: Last Blood (2019). The hiatus between the third movie and the fourth movie is two decades, astounding, isn’t it?! Yet, there’s not a trace of audience losing their steam for Rambo-craziness! However, the fifth installment, which is considered to be different from others, is hogging the limelight, much against the critics’ predictions.

How is ‘Rambo: Last Blood’ different?

The movie doesn’t hurry down the beaten path, but sidesteps Rambo’s routine gun-wielding fights with the armies, and brings to fore ferocity and viciousness that’s unseen so far. Unlike its other movies, in this one, there’s drama created to touch the audiences’ hearts. To an extent, one could feel the poignant humane connect and Rambo’s emotional cravings to exonerate himself of the war ghosts of his past! The father-daughter relationship builds a subtle rapport with the audiences and the pain of daughter wandering off is quite palpable.

The drift

Last Blood’s plot, though loosely and predictably strung, holds the audiences’ attention with several captivating features. Few moviegoers are debunking the originality of the movie’s plot, comparing it to two other ‘English’ movies. They could be on mark to some extent, but one can’t take away the soul of the movie that puts Rambo in fiery action, which the audience loves to bits. At 73, Rambo is fit as a fiddle and knows how to deliver a death-punch with military ease. There’s no telling, he looks his age. The bulging veins and the stagger in the walk somehow can’t hide it. But one doesn’t sense he is up against the odds when put into violent-action against svelte young men.

The twist in the tale

All it takes is a shift in the winds. Rambo peacefully lives on a ranch in Arizona. He resides with a family friend, Maria (Andriana Barraza) along with her teenaged granddaughter Gabrielle (Yvette Monreal), who is like an adopted daughter to Rambo. But, Rambo’s daughter, acting against his advice, gives him a slip and goes to Mexico to meet her actual father – who doesn’t want her back. When she doesn’t return, Rambo gets into gear to trace and bring her back. Will he get her back is what drives the story forward.

Rambo’s guerilla tactics!

When the drug lords underestimate Rambo’s prowess and leave him with a mark on his face instead of killing him, one can only pray death comes sweetly to them. But, nah, it doesn’t. Revenge-taking is what seems to be flowing in Rambo’s blood veins. Rambo decapitates the head of a drug lord and trails the road with blood towards his home. The drug cartel falls for this and arrives at his doorstep to seek revenge.  

It’s too late for the loony goons to realize the whole ranch is rigged. The tunnels Rambo builds meticulously become a hunting ground – to trap, hunt and prey. At which game, Rambo excels. Will the fight go in Rambo’s favour is what makes for a nail-biting finish!

The conclusion!

The movie ‘Rambo: Last Blood’ has more brutality and intensity than any other movie in the series. What starts as a slow-going movie, turns into a bloodbath, leaving behind carnage of bodies.  Will Rambo die? Or will he live to do another ‘Rambo’ movie are few things that are sure to bother restless souls. Whatever critics say, one must view this movie to witness Rambo’s chaste action. It’s a flick definitely worth a watch.

Batman Forever

Celebrating the 80-year success of Batman. The caped crusader, super detective, and vigilante of Gotham City continues to fight crime in dark alleys, shadowy streets and seedy roof tops.Time to pay tribute to the super hero who ignites hope among Gothamites that good will win over evil eventually!  As the unruly, gun-wielding crime perpetrators run loose in Gotham City, the only solace the citizens hold is that there’s Batman with his stockpile of jaw-dropping, hi-tech gadgetry at his disposal to fight crime. But what poses a super big problem is that Gotham City’s villainous tribe is of a truly high-order merit: Riddler, Joker, Penguin, Catwoman, Ventriloquist, Mister Freeze, Scarecrow, Egghead and others, who are not only harder to fight against but also harder still to dispose of. Will Bruce Wayne, aka Batman, emerge as a victor?  Is that what the edge of the seat excitement for Batman-obsessed fans has always been! Frankly, the thrill has never been so chillingly dark and feverish. 

Conversely, could you believe, Batman has been fighting crime since 1939, when he first made his appearance in the DC comics? Over 80-years gone by, Batman is still doing what he does best – getting rid of the syndicate organized crime in Gotham City. Any complaints?! No, none at all. If any ‘Jokers’ disagree, they may. Remember. Remember again, Jokers, Riddlers, Eggheads, hold no chance against the genius-level, martial arts trained, dark-hooded, Batman. 

For those in the dark; who raise eyebrows when questioned on how Bruce Wayne became Batman? Here’s the sad but compelling story. Joe Chill is a well-known mugger in Gotham City. One day, Dr. Thomas Wayne and Martha Wayne are out with their son, Bruce, when Chill tries to steal Martha’s necklace. Unfortunately, Dr. Thomas Wayne intervenes. To avoid confrontation, Chill, having no second thoughts on his mind, shoots at Dr. Thomas. Martha screams for help, Chill pulls the trigger once again and Martha is dead too! Shocked at the sudden turn of events, little kid, Bruce, sits and mourns at the unfortunate demise of his parents; but not before he takes a vow to strike terror in the hearts of these hardcore criminals of Gotham City. 

Batman - a billionaire by day; dark knight by hours of darkness. Hidden beneath his sprawling estate is an ancient network of caves (batcaves) which stand as inventory to his technology and ammunition. Batman is aided by butler, Alfred, and by Jim Gordon, a police commissioner, who sends ‘batsignals’ to get Batman’s attention during crime situations. Robin, his sidekick, with his dapper look and flashy costume, does a darn good job in aiding Batman catch crooks!  

The master creators of “Batman”, artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger, fashioned the character on the likes of Superman. When first launched in the Detective Comics #27 in 1939, “Batman” gained swift acceptance and roseto instant fame. In no time, he got his own comic book title. The comics became a huge rage, selling in millions of copies. Batmania, caught on like wildfire, cutting across barriers of age, language, and culture and was on a steady climb to the top! 

Inspired by the explosive success of comics, a Television series “Batman” was launched in the mid 60’s. Adam West donned the role of Batman and Burt Ward, the role of Robin, the Boy Wonder. Both these fictional characters stole audiences’ hearts, laughter and common sense. That’s because William Dozier, the producer, intentionally made the TV Series into a slapstick comedy! The witticisms, the senselessness, the over boarding of scenes was deliberately cooked up to heighten pleasure. The result: Kids loved it. Adults jumped at it, while women didn’t give two hoots. Shot in colour originally, Batman and his villains donned zillion flashy colours that would blur the eye-sight, but it worked wonders on audience who saw humour in it and nothing else. Guess they all have gone bat-blind! Additionally, what threw in the extra punches were the witty puns delivered with deadpan faces. Adam West and Burt Ward were matchless when it came about to indulging in side-splitting humor without ever breaking into a laugh. 

Talking of silver screen, though there were several Batman movies prior, it was in 1989, under the director, Tim Burton, the “Batman” movie characters dazzled like true stars. Michael Keaton is still hailed as one amongst the best Batmen to be featured. Tim Burton somehow carries a noire merit in his exploration of characters. Jack Nicholson, who stars as villain, portrays the character of a clown and psychopath with some devastating effects on audiences. Tim Burton also came out with a sequel “Batman Returns” which played to packed houses.

Close on these two colossal successes, Joel Schumacher directed “Batman Forever” with Val Kilmer which received mixed reviews. A sequel, “Batman and Robin” starring George Clooney unfortunately turned out to be a huge dampener. However, Batman franchisee received a shot in the arm, when Christopher Nolan directed “Batman Begins” starring Christian Bale. The movie turned out to be a decent success. In a sort of quick succession, Nolan directed two more movies “Dark Knight” and “Dark Knight Rises” which were super-duper hits, making them block-busters! Batman Trilogy was how they came about to be known.

Batman character was in fact envied by countless individuals. Ben Affleck too stepped into the shoes of Batman under the direction of Zack Snyder in the movie “Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice”. Later, he also starred in a crossover movie “Justice League” which featured other DC comic heroes as well. 

Batman films brought about a certain kind of seriousness and maturity to the Batman character, while lending him a celebrity status in the mainstream culture. As Batman completes his 80 years, let’s raise a toast to this super hero character who fastidiously built up a fanbase of millions and millions of “bat” fans!

Music for free! Death, at a cost.

No life is worth living without a passion for at least one thing - a philosophy I always held close to my heart. The more leisure pursuits one has, the richer his life is guaranteed to be is the general notion that binds the heart strong. But, hold the breath, not all leisure pursuits are healthy. Hobbies like smoking and drinking could be costly. Drinks are usually laced with subtle poison that only draws you closer to death. Every sip is a walk in that direction of the dark recess of hell. I realized this, when I looked in the eye of death, which danced on my friend’s face long time ago. The memories are still fresh in my mind.  

  

Flash back – 2008 I was working for an ad agency, where I met Benji who was an ace copywriter, I envied the way his words formed sentences and the paragraphs, of course, literally blew me away. That’s when I drew close to him to draw on some of his wisdom and replicate his magic on the paper. But, he was genius who danced to a different beat - a man given to too many whims and fancies. A few include women, drinks, smoking, and songs.

Married, yet, his eyes always ogled around for more flesh. I hoped his scales on the eyes would drop and his inner eyes would open, making him realize that there’s more to life than woman’s flesh. But, he preferred to keep his scales on. And I was left with no choice but ignore his wretched heart but hang on to his every word of writing. Of course, his music collection was another thing he held close to his heart. That only heightened our bond of friendship since music was my “love” too!

His taste in songs swung from one end to the other, including remotest Spanish groups to hardcore rock bands. Gypsy kings to Metallica he had a taste for heavenly as well as ungodly music. I loved to talk to him when he was sober, which was extremely rare. This was usually towards the end of the month, when he had philandered away his money and had money only to buy food, not enough for smokes or drinks. That’s when philosophy poured out of him unabated.

That’s also when he shared me what books he liked to read, how he had come to craft copy that had the hearts of the clients and customers with equal ease. He was boastful; I felt no offence, because with writing skills as his, I thought he was entitled to! When he spoke of writing he had a glaze in his eyes, he was lost in thought, and his body acted strange. Anybody, looking at him would immediately scream he is on a high. Yes, if it weren’t the smokes and drinks that couldn’t give him the high, it was the writing he seemed to snort on to get that high. I once took his works to a client; the client screamed in elation and said, “Damn, here’s someone who can really write, someone who knows how to translate thoughts!”

I loved to stare at his work; in fact, I stole his notebooks from him, so I knew how to draft copy that looked like his but was actually mine. I would have given my arm and a leg to write like that. If you think it’s too much, leg it! ;) Nevertheless, all was not well in Benji’s camp. Once, in the dead of the night, I got a call.  Benji’s voice whispered, “Dan, where are you man?” I screamed, “Benji, its 2 am in the morning what the hell’s wrong with you? Calling me at this unearthly hour?”

But, I could hear him breath hard and heavy. “I am not feeling well, man. Can you take me to a hospital, he blurted out. I scrambled out of bed. Put on something    warm as it was in the middle of chilly winter, drove to his place in a matter of minutes. Benji was lying on the bed mourning with pain. One look at him told me he was in bad shape. We hired a car and went to the nearest hospital.

But, as it was night, no facilities were available, so we had to wait till morning to get the tests done. When the results came out we hurried back to the doctor. The doctor looked at the results and said, “Benji, You are in an awfully bad shape, one drop of whisky or alcohol of any sort will kill you. Be careful. Be very careful. Don’t touch alcohol.” Knowing Benji, I knew this would be impossible.

In fact, when I first joined the agency, I had a dream that Benji was going to die, and in that dream, it may sound strange, but God wanted me to warn him. It was quite scary. When I told him that he was doing something wrong and god was not in synch, he instantly put his finger on the weakness. He said, “I only drink, Dan. How can god be offended at that? I am not harming anyone”, he explained.  

I exchanged the Biblical gyan that our body is the temple of god, one who destroys it, him will god destroy.” He got scared, “He said, “Dan, you are scaring me, man. I am going home now, if boss asks, tell him, I am not feeling well. He scooted out of the office, hopped into an auto and disappeared into the crowds. The next day, he was usual self, chirpy and slightly drunk.  This was all before our trip to the doctor when he was unwell.

However, as days passed, Benji stopped coming to the office, having a vague feeling, I scurried to his house, I could see him sleeping from the window, after I rang the bell a couple of times, I asked the servant, “Why isn’t he answering the doorbell?” He replied, “He does the same to me, sometimes, he answers, sometimes he doesn’t.”

I left the house, knowing he is drunk stupid to open the door. After a couple of months, I got a call again from Benji. Dan, I am not feeling well.

I scuttled to his house and could make out that he was drunk as usual. Then, realizing that things are not in his favour, I asked him where his family stays. He said, “My sister stays in Mumbai.” I called her up, she was receptive, “we actually advised him not to go to Hyderabad, since we would have no control of stopping him from drinking, but he wouldn’t listen” she replied.

She then sent me an air ticket from Hyderabad to Mumbai for Benji to my mail iddy, I dutifully handed it out to him saying he might think of returning to Hyderabad once he gets alright, knowing pretty clear it was a mammoth task. He agreed, next day, with a new zest, he swung his bag of belongings over his shoulder and walked and got into the car waiting for him to take him to the Hyderabad Airport.  That was the last I saw of Benji.

Months passed, one day, I thought of calling him. After a lot of rings, a voice came over, “Hello?” “Hi Benji, this is Dan, you remember?”  “Yeah, yeah. How are you doing man?” he replied. His slur in the speech spoke clearly of his unabated drinking.  He was inebriated as usual, I chit-chatted for some time and hung up. I was pretty cross at him for not giving up his darned habit as could literally see the writing on the wall that he is headed the wrong way at full throttle.

One afternoon, I was industriously caught up in some church work, when the mobile rang, I said, “Hello?” The voice on the other end answered, “Hi there! This is Benji’s sister, I have a bad news. Benji is no more”. I stopped in my tracks. I knew this would happen, but not that soon. “Oh, I am sorry”, I replied.

She then asked me for help.  “Can you please settle Benji’s bills at Hyderabad as he wouldn’t be coming back? Please sell off everything he owns (which were bare necessities) and pay off the rent, the servant salary, etc.” I wholeheartedly offered help out. After everything was put on the market, there was still the music system and a good number of CDs. I asked Benji’s sister what I I should do with them. She said, “Danny, I think you can keep the system and the CDs. That’s the least I can do for all the assistance”. That came as a complete surprise as he had an awesome collection of music CDs - at least a 100 and above. More than the system, it was the CDs that drove me mad. It was a windfall of fortune. Nevertheless it was all a mixture of pain and happiness. 

After all these years, I still miss Benji. He had a gem of a talent but he couldn’t harness it to its full potential. The bosses too, knowing him as a drunk, paid half of what he was worth. But, he didn’t mind as he just needed money for drinks.

Though I miss him, there’s this particular CD of his which had a beautiful mix of numbers like “Sweet Caroline”  “Hit the Road Jack”  “Pretty Woman”  “Hundred Miles Away from Home”  “Oh Carol” …and others that  remind of the good times we have had when Benji was sober. I play this CD often in my car when I am on a long journey and the good old memories come right kicking in. Those were truly awesome days! 

Jersey

Rarely, you come across movies that spin your mind at an RPM of 1000 or more. Jersey, the newly released Telugu movie, is one such type that takes you on a roller-coaster ride. Sometimes the feelings are so hysterically good and at other times, so hysterically sad; it’s like you are shedding tears one moment and laughing aloud the next. 

Arjun (Nani) may not be blessed in the looks department, but certainly makes it up in the acting one. Gowtham Tinnanuri, the director, caught the pulse of the 1990’s, the movie’s background, and portrays it flawlessly with HeroHonda CD 100s, auto rickshaws and Ambassador cars crisscrossing the not-so-crowded roads. The feeling is distinctly palpable. If you are a 90’s person you can’t but help feel nostalgic. 

Shraddha Srinath, the heroine, has staged a fabulous job as the nonchalant wife, who is frustrated at Arjun's laziness and indifference. The presence of Arjun's coach, coach Murthy (Sathyaraj) is a constant hope and reminder that Arjun would resume cricketing. His role hugely supports in building the movie’s plot through occasional and unexpected interventions and reveting performance. His friends, who are constantly egging him, spice up the moments while staying empathetic, adding that pinch of salt!

All in all, Jersey basically is a cricket themed movie, but goes beyond cricketing, stirring emotions like no other.  

The story is a narrative in the past, giving inside dope as to what threw Arjun away from the game and away from the arms of his love life. The plot: Arjun, who is an ace cricket player, falls in love with the Christian girl, Sarah. Initially, the bond is strong as Sarah deserts her family and marries Arjun. But things start falling apart, when Arjun quits playing cricket and loses his job as a result of wrongly placed corruption charges. The family goes through a thick turmoil, leaving Sarah no choice but to take up work to support the family. This seems like the breaking point as she feels Arjun is avoiding shouldering the family’s responsibility and she is the only one pulling the family’s cart.

On the flipside, what constantly plaques the audience’s minds is why is Arjun reluctant to take up a job as an Associate Coach, which is offered by his coach, or for that matter why he left playing cricket suddenly. Ten years passed, he hasn’t touched his cricket bat. Not once.  For what reason? Is a question that keeps bobbing up in the audience’s minds!

The story moves into action when Arjun’s son asks for a Jersey. And Arjun doesn't have Rs. 500 to buy it. Arjun sees an opportunity when his coach Murthy asks him to play a charity match between Indian and England. Thinking it could net him Rs 1,000, he agrees to play only to discover whatever is earned  would be given away in charity, including his Rs.1000.

Ironically, his performance in the charity match is greatly appreciated. His son becomes a huge fan seeing him in this new avatar. Bearing in mind his son’s joy, and his wife’s constant worry that she is the cause for him to leave cricket, Arjun plans to stage a comeback to cricket.

Armed with a renewed aggression, he decides to play cricket for India at age 37. His coach disagrees; his wife disagrees; and the selectors disagree; but his steely resolve won’t give in to pressures.

His performance on the training pitch proves his detractors wrong as selectors pick him up for the Hyderabad team to play the Ranji Trophy.

Thereon, in every match, Arjun puts on an envious performance. But with the earlier sudden twists and turns in the plot, one is doubtful whether Arjun would deliver the goods or not towards the conclusion;

However, beating the odds, the Hyderabad team slowly pulls into the semi-finals aided with Arjun’s brilliant knocks. Will the final match be a death-knell or life saviour for Arjun?

This is something one should watch since it would be inappropriate to run a spoiler here for a movie so good. The ending comes as a total surprise, pulling on everyone’s heartstrings. So for those who haven’t watched the movie, it is a mix of laughter, tears and elation! Go watch it before this movie gets clouded by other mediocre ones!

There is a tavern, deep within the castle walls. The tavern is bustling with activity, drinks and obnoxious laughter everywhere. The scent of alcohol and smoke is heavy in the air, and in the center of the room is a giant fireplace and bearskin rug. Suddenly someone, in jest, points at a peculiar looking old man, and urges him to recount his tale of "dancing with the dead". Curious men gather around, and the bard begins to play a somber tune on his lute. The man stands up, swaying, drink in hand, and gazes around the room as the noise dies down, and everybody's eyes fall on him. Men pull up their chairs, eager to hear the tale. The old man speaks, a wild glint in his eye... "Let me tell you a story to chill the bones..."

Farewell, Stanley!

Comics intrinsically create parallel worlds for youngsters. The grandiose they are built, the loftier experiences the readers could draw. Stan Lee, who passed away this week, understood this inherent philosophy way back in the 60's and 70's and created some of the finest superhero characters and mind-numbing stories, taking youngsters on a ride, sometimes on an intergalactic ride, giving them a time of their life.

Actually, Stan Lee to a great extent was behind the superheroes, who starred in comic books then, transitioning to the silver screen now, without losing their sheen! Today, these superheroes are a huge rage!

Whether it’s casting spider webs donning the red-faced mask, or the green beefcake hurling tanks across the battle field or the military man throwing his blue-and-red stripped shield to protect his fellow friends, or the ‘unequalled four’ molding and melting into the foreground before delivering the fatal attack, Stan Lee’s visionary thinking had created a lively world of superheroes, the today’s millennials are madly in love with and would do anything to share its spirited glory.  

Yes! We are referring to “Marvel Movies”. Stan Lee, the man instrumental in the creation of “Marvel Cinematic Universe” and the release of movies such as Avengers: Age of Ultron, Avengers: Infinity war, The Incredible Hulk, Thor: Ragnarok, Captain America, Guardians of the Galaxy, and numerous others, is simply phenomenal. While most people are mapping their retirement plans by their early 40s, Lee has been carving his name in golden letters on the silver screen with his amazing marvel stories even in his 90s. What a colossal attitude!!!

Lee’s brilliant mind co-conceived many superhero characters in collaboration with co-writers/artists Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko along with the marvel team. Spiderman, The Hulk, Thor, X-men, Doctor Strange, Fantastic Four and the Ant-Man are some characters that have dent the history and gone on to make history. The string of works he has produced speaks of his genius. All his characters and their movies were total sell-out to global audiences. While everyone thought this sudden attraction to “Marvel Movies” would fizzle out; to the utter surprise and dismay, it gathered momentum. What’s more, novelty and multidimensional cinematic values delivered top dollar’s worth of viewing to global audiences, raking in huge moolah for producers.

However, one question keeps popping up: how did Stan Lee create this vast canvas of works that speaks of flawless characters and incredible stories?! Agreeably, he was a team man! First, he would give out the synopsis of a story to his artists and he would then lend them creative liberties to draw pictures as they imagine in their eye of the mind, giving full scope for imagery. After it’s completed, Stan Lee would fill up the blurbs and boxes with his story. Brilliant, isn’t that?!

In fact “Black Panther” is another of his “marvel”lous creation. Though the character was created much earlier, it only caught everyone’s eyes with the movie “Black Panther”. While the script kept one deeply engrossed, the cinematic production was too awesome to overlook. The rich narrative coupled with usage of high-technology gadgetry puts Africa on a different pedestal. The whole story gives the audiences goose bumps, while carving a distinct place for itself. How, Black Panther story is crafted and how it rose to occupy its rightful spot in the hearts of audiences is a secret only Lee could perhaps tell. What’s more! Watch carefully, you will find Lee doing a cameo role in the movie. He is known to do lot of cameos in Marvel movies.

From the beginning, Lee was passionate about becoming a writer, but unfortunately, poverty stood him up against pursuing his career! In fact, he took up menial jobs to survive before landing the job as Assistant at the new Timely Comics, a Martin Goodman’s company. From then on, it was a no-turning back.  After Simon and Jack Kirby, creative partners, left the company, Goodman installed Lee as Interim Editor. This gave him an opportunity to rise through the ranks.

Over a period, he created a technicolor virtual kingdom, where the good fight against the bad - in print as well as on screen - while the whole world watches and applauds. Frankly, Lee was like no other. He may have left this world. But, he definitely created an alternate universe for his readers and viewers to revel in forever. At his sad demise, It’s only apt for us to remember a quote from his Marvel Movies “Heroes are made by the path they choose, not the powers they are graced with”. Farewell, Stan Lee!

Tale of a Rockstar

Legendary Queen’s biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” is releasing in theatres across the world this November. The audiences are all set to dance to the tune of this cult rock group, which has shunned inhibitions; walked the unbeaten path; and ignored the critics to script its own history of success. Behind the meteoric rise of “Queen” is only one name, Farrokha Bulsara, who is better known as Freddie Mercury – the music legend who redefined “Rock and Roll” and won scores of music aficionados for both – the band and himself.

Freddie Mercury, a singer and songwriter, had conscientiously steered the rock band “Queen” to fame and achievement. His incredible stage presence and his four-octave vocal range gave audiences a high in a manner their contemporaries couldn’t. Earlier, a not-so-popular band which comprised Brian May and Roger Taylor had not many takers. But once Mercury joined the force, he set the stage ablaze and Queen’s music sales started to skyrocket.

Mercury in particular was praised for belting out bewitching numbers like “Don’t Stop me Now”, “In the Lap of Gods” “Hammer to Fall” “Killer Queen” “Seven Seas of Rhye” “Need your Loving Tonight” among others. Of course, “Bohemian Rhapsody”, which catapulted the band to astounding heights of glory.

In fact, what put “Queen” and Mercury on the trail of immense popularity was Mercury’s composition of “Bohemian Rhapsody”, which made audiences scream in ecstasy for its distinct peculiarity. Freddie scripted, this six-minute suite, comprising several compositions, for the album “A Night at Opera”. It was an exorbitantly expensive composition ever made till then and left men involved biting their nails in pre-release anxiety. 

Eventually, “Bohemian Rhapsody” turned out to be a huge commercial success. The iconic photographs and the official video further threw open the doors for similar music videos, making it a trend-setter of sorts. “Bohemian Rhapsody” not only cemented the band’s position, but went on to break records of sorts. What happened afterwards was a cult following, Mercury becomes an iconic legend.

Although Mercury is the star performer of the music band, the biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” is all about “Queen”.  Walking this tight rope, the movie captures the rise of the band, which is not-so-spectacular as there are no visible bumps on the road to glory. On the flip-side, the movie also carries a rich tale of the frontman, Mercury, who is juxtaposed with contradictions and unforeseen incidents.

The biopic supposedly captures diverse magical moments, including the one where the band members coin their own kind of music to pep up the audiences. Rami Malek, who donned the role of Freddie Mercury, happens to seize the spotlight with his extraordinary acting skills. His commanding screen presence seems to be a major draw, outshining the other players in the game.

Within the realm of “Bohemian Rhapsody”, Mercury’s short-lived life was captured with sensitivity. His encounter with Aids and his sex life are dealt subtly without shedding much spotlight on them. The movie culminates with “Queen’s performance at LIVE AID in 1985, bringing back sweet memories and nostalgia. As a wave after wave of reminisces keeps hitting, as Mercury’s haunting voice reverberates with songs like “Radio Ga Ga”, “We Are The Champions”, “We Will Rock You”, it’s time to pay tribute to this music legend by soaking and reveling in the much-talked about biopic, “Bohemian Rhapsody”.

Rock with Bryan Adams!

Ever stood frozen in your tracks listening to numbers that are so soothing your foot starts tapping and head starts swaying and you are transported to a surreal world of romance? The moment is not far, as Bryan Adams, Grammy Award winning singer-song writer, is set to indulge Hyderabadis with his breathtaking, awe-inspiring numbers on his “Ultimate Tour” to India, this October. 

One amongst the top stage performers, Bryan Adams knows how to entertain crowds that throng the performance venue. Holding audiences spellbound with his amazing stage-presence and husky voice, he is also known for his spur-of-the-moment gigs and antics with his guitar. The artist is particularly in love with Hyderabad as he mentions in his earlier stage performance in 2011 that Hyderabadi crowd was the loudest and ingeniously went on to delight crowds with heart-touching melodies for a memorable time. “Everything I do”, the background theme song for the flick “Robinhood: prince of thieves”, was what shot the artist into the next orbit of popularity. While the movie went on to become a top-grosser at the box-office, the song prevailed in winning hearts with its soothing melody. The aptly-worded theme song was even nominated for a Grammy Award.

“Please forgive me” is a slow power ballad that has Bryan giving his vocal chords a full throttle. Originally written by Adams himself, the song gave the needed thrust to the Album “So far So good” pushing it to the number two position in the UK; number one position in Australia; and the number seven in the US during the 90s. Years gone by, the song still hasn’t lost its flavour. 

“18 till I die” is originally the seventh studio album, which featured singles such as “Have you ever really loved a woman”, “The only thing that looks good on me is you”, “Let’s make a night to remember” along with “18 till I die”. “Heaven” is another number that’s smooth. Written by Jim Wallace and Adams himself, “Heaven” first featured on the “A night in heaven” soundtrack album and later went on to win a good number of awards. Subdued music and distinct composition play on the heartstrings with a new fervor every time one listens to this trance-inducing number. Not merely these numbers, but there are countless other melodies that never fail to put a twinkle in the eye.

It's time to Bond

“Shaken, but not stirred” is how James Bond likes his Martinis. If you are a Bond admirer, here’s news that will leave you stirred up for more chills and lots of edge-of-the-seat action. Yes! The die has been cast. Danny Boyle’s name is picked up from the lot for directing the new James Bond franchise, which will be titled “Bond25” as it is the 25th film in the franchise, starring Daniel Craig.

The hunt for new director, which closed in on Danny Boyle, comes in the wake of Sam Mendes, who earlier helmed “Skyfall” and “Sceptre” – two major box-office blockbusters, calling it quits to directing the James Bond franchise. In effect, Daniel Craig is believed to have walked the same path, stating he would never act in another Bond film after “Sceptre”. He fervently put across that he’d rather cut himself with glass than play another role of James Bond. However, after Mendes quit, Craig took a complete U-turn and expressed his interest in James Bond’s role. Talk of “Bond” being devious in the real sense. 

On the other hand, Boyle, without an iota of doubt, is a top-rung filmmaker, who holds credit for making strange yet impactful movies like “Slumdog Millionaire”, “The Beach”, “Trainspotting”, “127 hours” “Trance” and others. What piques one’s imagination about the upcoming Bond flick are Danny Boyle’s directional abilities. Introspection into his earlier movies throws light on his unique scene depictions which are inimitably imaginative and often interspersed with eye-catching elements and artistic images. While his stories are real there’s somewhere the object of surrealism creeping into interweave with the real. 

Danny Boyle has the ability to dream on a wider and bigger canvas with multiple happenings taking place simultaneously. A glance at the London 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony will unravel the multi-dimensional facets that come to play under his supervision. He is a director, who promises to be gifted in portraying Bond at his best. Daniel Craig’s fame is also bound to catapult to further heights as the strength of Boyle is his fast-paced narrative. He is a man who wouldn’t mince words, but deliver results. 

On the flip-side of the coin, Daniel Craig has actually stood the test of time. His athletic body and non-confirmative approach to acting initially had everyone bothered whether he would meet Bond expectations or not. However, he pulled the rug under the naysayers and steadied himself in the shoes of James Bond. When “Casino Royale” launched Daniel Craig as Bond, the initial Parkour chase sequence alone had endeared him to the audiences. In fact, Craig’s death-defying crane jump in the flick had recently been voted the best James Bond Stunt of all time.

Craig must have acted in four movies, but solidly established his position in Hollywood as a bankable Bond. The trick was he made Bond look fallible and emotional, thereby portraying the character as humane and vulnerable as possible, upping the ante on several relatable factors to real-life characteristics. This created a chord of connects amongst the audiences across continents. 

Going by the tone of Danny Boyle’s voice, he’s all upbeat about the “Bond25”. Speaking to a crowd at a New York Screening of his new FX show, “Trust”, Boyle commented that the new Bond movie script might also include the dimensions of certain issues that besought the Hollywood and other industries in recent times. This is in the wake of questions raised by journalists as to how the Bond film would differ in today’s evolving times of #metoo #timesup issues. 

With this deadly combo – Danny Boyle and Daniel Craig - coming together to recreate the magic of James Bond all over again with their next film, which will open to global audiences in November 2019, the air is thick with positivity that the new movie will leave everyone “Shaken” much like how Bond enjoys his Martinis.
